    Area of Science:

    • * Tropical Medicine
    • * Parasitology
    • * Public Health

    Background:

    • * Parasitic infections pose significant health challenges in tropical regions.
    • * Understanding parasite prevalence is crucial for effective public health interventions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • * To survey the prevalence of intestinal and blood parasites in Bali, Indonesia.
    • * To identify specific helminth and protozoan species affecting the local population.

    Main Methods:

    • * Examination of 270 stool specimens from three villages in Bali.
    • * Analysis of 284 blood smears for microfilariae and malaria parasites.
    • * Microscopic identification of parasite eggs, larvae, and protozoa.

    Main Results:

    • * Over 90% prevalence for Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura.
    • * 59% prevalence of hookworm eggs; various protozoa identified.
    • * Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum diagnosed in Kusamba village.

    Conclusions:

    • * High burden of common intestinal helminths in Bali in 1974.
    • * Presence of malaria parasites indicates a co-existing parasitic threat.
    • * Data highlights the need for targeted parasite control programs.
