Ultrastructural observations on two parathyroid adenomas

    Summary

Electron microscopy revealed neoplastic cell markers in parathyroid adenomas. Annulate lamellae, associated with hormonal synthesis, were observed, suggesting a link to function rather than growth rate.

    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Cell Biology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Parathyroid adenomas are common endocrine tumors.
    • Understanding the ultrastructural features of these tumors is crucial for diagnosis and understanding their behavior.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the ultrastructural characteristics of parathyroid adenomas using electron microscopy.
    • To identify organelles associated with neoplastic cells and their functional state.

    Main Methods:

    • Electron microscopic examination of two parathyroid adenoma samples.
    • Analysis of cellular organelles, including intracytoplasmic cilia and annulate lamellae.

    Main Results:

    • Detection of organelles typically associated with neoplastic cells, such as intracytoplasmic cilia and annulate lamellae.
    • Annulate lamellae appear correlated with hormonal synthesis rather than the rate of neoplastic tissue growth.

    Conclusions:

    • Intracytoplasmic cilia and annulate lamellae are indicators of cellular atypia in parathyroid adenomas.
    • Annulate lamellae may play a role in hormonal synthesis in parathyroid neoplastic tissue.
