    Area of Science:

    • Psychopharmacology
    • Clinical Psychology
    • Neurology

    Background:

    • Chronic anxiety disorders represent a significant clinical challenge.
    • Current anxiety treatments have limitations, necessitating exploration of alternative pharmacotherapies.
    • Beta-adrenergic blocking agents are increasingly investigated for non-cardiac indications.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of propranolol hydrochloride in managing symptoms of chronic anxiety disorders.
    • To assess both psychic and somatic symptom improvement in patients treated with propranolol.
    • To characterize the side effect profile of propranolol in this patient population.

    Main Methods:

    • A double-blind, crossover study design was employed.
    • Twenty-six patients diagnosed with chronic anxiety disorders participated.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Symptom severity was assessed using patient and observer ratings.
  • Main Results:

    • Propranolol hydrochloride demonstrated a positive therapeutic effect, reducing symptoms in 17 out of 26 patients.
    • Significant improvements were noted in both somatic and psychic anxiety symptoms.
    • Commonly reported side effects included dizziness, fatigue, and insomnia, which were generally mild and difficult to differentiate from anxiety symptoms.
    • Observed therapeutic and adverse effects suggested central nervous system (CNS) activity of propranolol.

    Conclusions:

    • Propranolol hydrochloride offers a potential benefit for patients suffering from chronic anxiety.
    • The drug's CNS activity warrants further investigation in the context of anxiety treatment.
    • Comparative studies are needed to establish the efficacy of propranolol relative to other established antianxiety medications.
