    Summary

    Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency does not appear to cause cataracts in Thailand. This study found similar cataract rates in G6PD deficient and normal individuals, suggesting no link.

    Background:

    • Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is a common genetic disorder.
    • Cataractogenesis, the process of cataract formation, is multifactorial.
    • The potential role of G6PD deficiency in cataract development requires investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between G6PD deficiency and senile cataracts in a Thai population.
    • To compare the incidence of G6PD deficiency in patients with senile cataracts versus control groups.

    Main Methods:

    • Cross-sectional study comparing G6PD deficiency prevalence.
    • Inclusion of male and female participants with and without senile cataracts.
    • Statistical analysis to determine differences in incidence and age of onset.

    Main Results:

    • G6PD deficiency incidence in Thai males with senile cataracts was 5.92% (338 participants) vs. 6.95% in controls (446 participants).

    • No significant difference in the age of cataract onset was observed between G6PD deficient and normal groups.

    Conclusions:

    • G6PD deficiency is not a significant risk factor for senile cataract development in the studied Thai population.
    • The findings suggest that G6PD deficiency does not influence cataractogenesis in this demographic.
    • Further research may explore other genetic or environmental factors in cataract formation.
