Multiple cutaneous fibromyxomas: a light and electron microscopic study

Summary

A novel skin tumor, termed fibromyxoma, presents as numerous nodular lesions clinically resembling dermatofibromas. Microscopic analysis reveals abundant mucin, fibroblasts, and histiocytes, distinguishing it as a unique entity.

Background:

Dermatofibromas are common benign skin tumors.
Distinguishing between similar-appearing skin lesions can be challenging.

Observation:

A 27-year-old woman presented with multiple nodular skin lesions (3-15 mm).
Lesions were clinically indistinguishable from dermatofibromas.

Findings:

Light microscopy revealed abundant dermal mucin, fibroblasts, and histiocytes.
Electron microscopy showed unique features in fibroblasts (dilated endoplasmic reticulum) and histiocytes (intracellular collagen, myelinoid figures).
The distinct microscopic findings support a new tumor classification.

Implications:

Introduction of the term 'fibromyxoma' for this distinct tumor type.
This classification aids in accurate dermatopathological diagnosis.
Further research may elucidate the specific etiology and behavior of fibromyxoma.
