    Background:

    • Disorientation and behavioral deficits are common in institutionalized elderly adults.
    • Reality Orientation (RO) is a therapeutic approach to address these issues.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the effectiveness of a 24-hour Reality Orientation (RO) program over one year in institutionalized elderly adults.
    • To evaluate RO's impact on cognitive status, daily living activities, and interpersonal behaviors.

    Main Methods:

    • A one-year study comparing an RO group with a control group in a home for the aged.
    • Evaluations included the Mental Status Questionnaire (MSQ) and Activities of Daily Living (ADL) ratings.
    • A subsample of disoriented residents specifically attended RO classes.

    • The RO subsample showed a slight, statistically significant improvement on the MSQ after 6 months compared to controls.
