Demographic background for international gerontological studies

J S Siegel

    Journal of Gerontology
    |January 1, 1981
    PubMed
    Summary

International demographic variations reveal that more developed countries (MDC) have a higher proportion of elderly individuals and aged-dependency ratios compared to less developed countries (LDC). Population aging is projected to increase globally by the year 2000.

    Area of Science:

    • Demography
    • Gerontology
    • Sociology

    Background:

    • Understanding international demographic variations is crucial for aging studies.
    • Key measures include population aged 65+, sex ratios, and dependency ratios.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze current and projected international demographic variations relevant to aging.
    • To compare demographic measures between more developed countries (MDC) and less developed countries (LDC).

    Main Methods:

    • Descriptive analysis of demographic data for different global regions.
    • Inclusion of population projections to the year 2000.
    • Examination of fertility's role in demographic variations.

    Main Results:

    • MDC exhibit lower rates of increase in elderly populations but higher proportions of the aged.
    • MDC show higher aged-dependency ratios and lower total-dependency ratios than LDC.
    • Projections indicate continued global population aging and rising aged-dependency ratios.

    Conclusions:

    • Significant international disparities exist in aging demographics.
    • Fertility rates are a key determinant of these demographic patterns.
    • Anticipated increases in aged populations necessitate future planning.
