    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Andrology
    • Medical Device Technology

    Background:

    • Erectile dysfunction (ED) affects a significant number of men, impacting quality of life.
    • Penile prostheses are a surgical option for managing severe ED.
    • Long-term outcomes of inflatable penile prostheses (IPPs) require ongoing evaluation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To report the outcomes of inflatable penile prostheses (IPPs) implanted at a single medical center.
    • To evaluate the complication rates and functional success of IPPs.
    • To assess patient satisfaction and intercourse ability after IPP implantation.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of patients who underwent IPP implantation.
    • Inclusion criteria: at least 1 year postoperative follow-up.
    • Data collection on complications, repairs, and functional outcomes.

    Main Results:

    • Over 100 IPPs implanted since 1974; 50 patients met the 1-year follow-up criteria.
    • Complications occurred in 10% of patients (20% total).
    • 8 complications were successfully repaired, with 48 patients (96%) having a functioning prosthesis and satisfactory intercourse.

    Conclusions:

    • Inflatable penile prostheses demonstrate a high rate of functional success and patient satisfaction.
    • Complications associated with IPPs are generally manageable and repairable.
    • IPP implantation is an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction, restoring sexual function.
