Pharmacological Treatments for Depression

Background:

Depression is a significant mental health condition requiring effective treatment strategies.
Imipramine hydrochloride is a tricyclic antidepressant used in managing major depressive disorder.
Predictive biomarkers for antidepressant response are crucial for personalized medicine.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the predictive validity of the Imipramine Response Scale - Male (IRS-M) for imipramine hydrochloride treatment response.
To assess if IRS-M scores could differentiate between responders and non-responders in a clinical sample.

Main Methods:

18 hospitalized male patients with depression were enrolled.
Patients received imipramine hydrochloride treatment for 28 days.
Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and Imipramine Response Scale - Male (IRS-M) were administered.
Treatment response was determined using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS).

Main Results:

Patients were categorized into responders and non-responders based on HDRS score changes.
The IRS-M was analyzed for its ability to predict these response categories.
No statistically significant predictive power was found for the IRS-M beyond chance.

Conclusions:

The Imipramine Response Scale - Male (IRS-M) demonstrated no significant ability to predict imipramine hydrochloride response in this cohort of male depressives.
Further research is needed to identify reliable predictors of antidepressant efficacy in male populations.
