    Summary

    A study found unexplained elevations in serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK) in acutely psychotic patients. Over half of these patients had a diagnosis of primary affective disorder, bipolar type (mania).

    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of unexplained elevated serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK) levels in acutely psychotic patients.
    • To determine if there is an association between elevated CPK and primary affective disorder, bipolar type (mania).

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 322 patient admissions over one year.
    • Identification of patients with acute psychosis and unexplained elevated serum CPK.
    • Review of patient diagnoses, focusing on primary affective disorder, bipolar type (mania).

    • Twenty-five acutely psychotic patients with unexplained elevated serum CPK were identified.
