    Summary

We present a case of lung abscess caused by Strongyloides infection in an asthmatic patient. Thiabendazole effectively treated the pulmonary strongyloidiasis, resolving the lung abscess.

    Area of Science:

    • Pulmonology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Parasitology

    Background:

    • Strongyloidiasis is a parasitic infection endemic in tropical and subtropical regions.
    • Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that may predispose individuals to certain infections.
    • Migration from endemic areas is a key factor in the global distribution of strongyloidiasis.

    Observation:

    • A case of lung abscess was observed in an asthmatic patient.
    • The patient had a history of migration from Burma, an area where strongyloidiasis is endemic.
    • The lung abscess was associated with pulmonary strongyloidiasis.

    Findings:

    • Pulmonary strongyloidiasis can manifest as a lung abscess.
    • The infection occurred three years after the patient migrated to Australia.
    • Thiabendazole demonstrated efficacy in eradicating the Strongyloides infection.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights the importance of considering strongyloidiasis in patients with lung abscesses, especially those with a history of migration from endemic areas.
    • Early diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary strongyloidiasis are crucial for successful outcomes.
    • Thiabendazole is an effective treatment option for Strongyloides infection, including pulmonary presentations.
