    Summary

A novel generator for Krypton-81m (81mKr) was developed for lung ventilation studies. It efficiently produces and collects 81mKr from its parent 81Rubidium (81Rb) using proton-induced reactions.

    Area of Science:

    • Nuclear medicine
    • Radiochemistry
    • Medical physics

    Background:

    • Krypton-81m (81mKr) is a valuable radionuclide for lung ventilation imaging.
    • Efficient and reliable methods for 81mKr production are crucial for clinical applications.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To design, construct, and evaluate a generator system for producing and collecting 81mKr.
    • To assess the performance of the generator at high flow rates for potential clinical use.

    Main Methods:

    • The parent nuclide, Rubidium-81 (81Rb), was synthesized via 70 MeV proton-induced reactions on a Rubidium sulfate (Rb2SO4) target.
    • 81mKr was separated from the 81Rb solution by bubbling with oxygen gas.
    • The 81mKr was collected in a reservoir and its purity was confirmed using a NaI(Tl) detector.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • The generator was successfully designed and tested, demonstrating continuous operation at flow rates up to 10 L/min.
    • An overall generator efficiency of 86% was achieved.
    • The collection rates of 81mKr in the reservoir were characterized under various flow conditions, and the purity of the 81mKr isomer was confirmed.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed generator system provides an efficient method for producing and collecting 81mKr for lung ventilation studies.
    • The generator's ability to operate at high flow rates and its high efficiency make it suitable for clinical applications.
