    Summary

A new biocompatible activated charcoal membrane improves chronic kidney disease treatment. Hemoperfusion combined with hemodialysis reduced treatment time and improved patient outcomes, showing good tolerance.

    Area of Science:

    • Nephrology
    • Biomaterials Science
    • Toxicology

    Background:

    • Activated charcoal effectively removes blood toxins but has poor biocompatibility and cannot remove urea, electrolytes, or water.
    • These limitations have restricted its use in chronic uremic patients.
    • A novel, highly hydrophilic methacrylate-based membrane coating for charcoal has been developed.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a combined hemodialysis-hemoperfusion schedule using a new coated charcoal membrane in chronic uremic patients.
    • To assess the impact on patients with dialysis-resistant uremic signs and those with adequate dialysis.

    Main Methods:

    • Eighteen uremic patients were treated with a combined hemodialysis-hemoperfusion schedule for 4-52 weeks.
    • Patients included those with relapsing uremia despite adequate dialysis and those with technically and clinically adequate dialysis.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Clinical and metabolic parameters, as well as biocompatibility and side effects, were monitored.
  • Main Results:

    • In patients with dialysis-resistant uremia, the combined treatment improved clinical signs and showed positive metabolic effects.
    • For patients with adequate dialysis, treatment time per week was reduced by approximately 30%.
    • The new coated charcoal demonstrated good biocompatibility and minimal side effects throughout the treatment period.

    Conclusions:

    • The novel coated charcoal membrane offers improved biocompatibility for hemoperfusion in uremic patients.
    • Combined hemodialysis-hemoperfusion is effective in managing chronic uremia, improving outcomes, and reducing treatment duration.
    • This approach presents a viable option for enhancing the care of chronic uremic patients.
