[Posterior shoulder luxations (author's transl)]

J Bernageau, D Patte

    Journal De Radiologie
    |August 1, 1980

    Summary

Posterior shoulder luxation is often missed, but frontal X-rays can reveal it. Look for increased glenohumeral joint space and head compression fractures for accurate diagnosis.

    Area of Science:

    • Radiology
    • Orthopedics
    • Medical Imaging

    Background:

    • Posterior shoulder luxation is frequently misdiagnosed.
    • Radiological diagnosis can be challenging, leading to delayed treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To highlight key radiological signs for diagnosing posterior shoulder luxation.
    • To emphasize the importance of specific radiographic views.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of frontal and specialized profile X-ray images.
    • Identification of indirect signs of posterior luxation.

    Main Results:

    • Increased glenohumeral interline size (12/14 cases) and anterior head compression fractures (9/14 cases) are key indicators on frontal views.
    • Bloom and Obatas' profile is crucial for confirming posterior luxation and assessing the glenoid rim.

    Conclusions:

    • Standard frontal and specific profile X-rays, when interpreted correctly, can reliably diagnose posterior shoulder luxation.
    • Early diagnosis through these radiological methods is vital for optimal joint prognosis.
