    Background:

    • Neuraminidase (EC 3.2.1.18) is an enzyme produced by various bacteria.
    • Understanding its production in Bacteroidaceae is crucial for bacterial classification.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate neuraminidase production in 77 Bacteroidaceae strains.
    • To characterize the conditions for Bacteroides fragilis neuraminidase production.
    • To assess the utility of neuraminidase production as a taxonomic marker.

    • B. eggerthii, B. uniformis, B. splanchnicus, and some B. melaninogenicus subspecies were negative. Fusobacterium and Leptotrichia species did not produce neuraminidase.

    Conclusions:

    • Neuraminidase production is a consistent characteristic within most examined bacterial species.
    • Assessing neuraminidase production can be a valuable addition to current biochemical tests for Bacteroidaceae taxonomy.
