    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Psychiatry
    • Cognitive Science

    Background:

    • For 50 years, research has aimed to link schizophrenia with uncommon word associations.
    • Previous reviews suggest success, but this study questions that consensus.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To critically evaluate the empirical evidence supporting the hypothesis of rare word associations in schizophrenia.
    • To identify methodological and data analysis flaws in frequently cited studies.

    Main Methods:

    • Systematic review of frequently cited studies on word association in schizophrenia.
    • Critical analysis of experimental design, data collection, and statistical methods used.

    Main Results:

    • Inadequately documented data and significant errors were found in the reviewed studies.
    • The data supporting the hypothesis of rare word associations in schizophrenia is considered illusory.

    Conclusions:

    • The widely accepted link between schizophrenia and rare word associations lacks robust empirical support.
    • Theories relying on this association require revision or new supporting evidence.
