Coupling between Na+ and sugar for sugar transport in a few Indian teleosts
Abstract:
Transepithelial transport of D-glucose and D-xylose depends on the sodium ions in the filling solution in the fishes Ophiocephalus punctatus (carnivorous) and Heteropneustes fossilis (omnivorous). Under low Na+ concentration, the rate of transport decreases, while an increase in concentration brings about a corresponding increase in the transport of these nutrients in both fishes. In most of the cases, at different Na+ concentrations significant differences is in the absorbed amount. Glucose transport is affected by Na+ more than the transport of xylose and regional variations occur in the transported amount.
