    Summary

Candida-associated renal papillary necrosis, a kidney condition linked to fungal invasion, was found in 21% of autopsy patients. Diagnosis is difficult, but the lesion may be more common than previously thought.

    Area of Science:

    • Pathology
    • Nephrology
    • Mycology

    Background:

    • Visceral candidiasis is a serious fungal infection.
    • Renal involvement in candidiasis can lead to complications.
    • Candida-associated renal papillary necrosis is not well-characterized.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the incidence of Candida-associated renal papillary necrosis.
    • To describe the clinicopathologic features of this condition.
    • To assess diagnostic challenges and clinical significance.

    Main Methods:

    • Autopsy study of 42 patients with visceral candidiasis.
    • Histopathological examination of renal tissues.
    • Correlation with clinical data and patient history.

    Main Results:

    • Renal papillary necrosis was identified in 9 patients (21%).
    • Fungal invasion of the kidney was present in all affected cases.
    • Prematurity and therapies like antibiotics or immunosuppressants were common associated factors.

    Conclusions:

    • Candida-associated renal papillary necrosis is more frequent than previously suspected.
    • The condition is challenging to diagnose antemortem.
    • Clinical significance is often obscured by other renal failure causes.
