    Axillary lymphoscintigraphy in breast cancer patients showed scans indistinguishable from normal in most cases. No specific uptake pattern reliably indicated carcinoma in the breast, contrary to previous findings.

    Background:

    • Axillary lymph node status is crucial for breast cancer staging and treatment.
    • Lymphoscintigraphy is a technique used to visualize lymphatic drainage.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the utility of axillary lymphoscintigraphy in patients with operable breast cancer.
    • To determine if a specific uptake pattern in lymphoscintigraphy is indicative of breast carcinoma.

    Main Methods:

    • Axillary lymphoscintigraphy was performed using the Agwunobi and Boak technique.
    • The study included 68 patients with operable breast cancer and 11 with benign breast disease.

    • In the majority of interpretable scans from breast cancer patients, the lymphoscintigraphy results were indistinguishable from normal findings.

    • Further research is needed to validate or refine the role of lymphoscintigraphy in breast cancer management.
