Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if marginal defects (ditching) in Class I amalgam restorations influence secondary caries formation.
  • To compare the prevalence of caries adjacent to ditched versus sound margins within the same oral environment.

  • Fifty-five extracted premolars and molars with Class I amalgam restorations were examined.
  • Macroscopic and microscopic examinations were performed on sections through ditched and sound margins.
