Area of Science:

  • Integrative Medicine
  • Urology
  • Neurology

Context:

  • Overactive bladder (OAB) significantly impacts quality of life.
  • Current OAB treatments have limitations and side effects.
  • Acupuncture presents a potential alternative therapy for OAB.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture at the BL-33 point for treating overactive bladder.
  • To assess the impact of acupuncture on OAB symptoms and bladder function.

Summary:

  • Eleven patients with overactive bladder (OAB) underwent acupuncture at bilateral BL-33 points.
  • Treatments involved manual needle rotation for 10 minutes, averaging 7 sessions.
  • Significant improvements were observed in urge incontinence, urgency, and uninhibited bladder contractions.

Impact:

  • Acupuncture at BL-33 demonstrated effectiveness in controlling overactive bladder symptoms.
  • The treatment led to statistically significant increases in maximum bladder capacity and bladder compliance.
  • This suggests acupuncture is a viable therapeutic option for managing overactive bladder.
