Summary

Background:

  • Different resistance training devices and protocols may yield varying physiological adaptations.
  • Understanding the comparative efficacy of accommodating resistance devices (ARD) and weight resistance devices (WRD) is important for optimizing training programs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effects of ARD training and WRD training on elbow flexor strength and muscle cross-sectional area (CSA).
  • To determine which training regimen, ARD or WRD, leads to greater improvements in strength and muscle mass.

Main Methods:

  • Twelve participants (6 men, 6 women) trained elbow flexors 3 days/week for 20 weeks.
  • One arm used ARD (3-5 sets of 10 maximal concentric actions).

  • The contralateral arm used WRD (3-5 sets of 8-12 repetitions to volitional failure).
  • Main Results:

    • Both ARD and WRD training significantly increased maximal strength (1 RM) and elbow flexor muscle CSA (biceps, brachialis, total).
    • WRD training resulted in greater increases in 1 RM on the WRD and brachialis CSA compared to ARD training.
    • No significant changes were observed in biceps Type I and II fiber area for either training type.

    Conclusions:

    • Both ARD and WRD are effective training methods for increasing elbow flexor strength and muscle mass.
    • WRD training may offer superior benefits for muscle mass gains, particularly in the brachialis muscle.
    • Training intensity was higher with ARD, while training volume was higher with WRD, with equal session times.
