Context:

Dental pins are used in restorative dentistry.
Gold-coated brass pins (Dentatus) were retrieved from patients.
Analysis was prompted by the need for retreatment.

Purpose:

To investigate surface alterations in retrieved gold-coated brass dental pins.
To determine the causes of corrosion on dental pin surfaces.
To understand the relationship between corrosion and periapical pathology.

Summary:

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis revealed gold coating inadequacy against corrosion.
Localized corrosion was attributed to anaerobic bacteria, evidenced by sulfur (S) presence.
