Summary

Few patients undergoing chemotherapy experienced hypothermia, a significant drop in body temperature. Cisplatin, a chemotherapy drug, was identified as the cause in these cases, with symptoms resolving naturally.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Hypothermia is a rare adverse effect of chemotherapy.
  • Limited data exists on chemotherapy-induced hypothermia.
  • Various chemotherapeutic agents have been implicated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the occurrence of hypothermia in patients with malignant lymphoma receiving cisplatin-based chemotherapy.
  • To identify cisplatin as the causative agent for hypothermia in this patient cohort.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 11 patients with malignant lymphoma treated with cisplatin-containing chemotherapy.
  • Monitoring of body temperature post-chemotherapy administration.

Main Results:

  • Five out of 11 patients (45%) developed hypothermia (body temperature as low as 34.3°C) after cisplatin treatment.
  • Hypothermia was observed in patients with both Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
  • The hypothermic episodes resolved spontaneously within a few days.

Conclusions:

  • Cisplatin is a potential cause of chemotherapy-induced hypothermia in patients with malignant lymphoma.
  • This adverse effect appears to be transient and self-limiting.
  • Further research is warranted to understand the mechanism and incidence of cisplatin-induced hypothermia.
