Summary

A single rectus abdominis muscle flap can be safely divided into two free flaps for simultaneous reconstruction of two separate defects. This technique offers reliable, well-vascularized options with excellent functional and cosmetic outcomes.

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Reconstructive Surgery
  • Microsurgery

Background:

  • Reconstructing moderate- to large-sized defects often requires complex surgical techniques.
  • Simultaneous reconstruction of two distinct defect sites presents a significant surgical challenge.

Observation:

  • A single rectus abdominis muscle flap can be safely based on either superior or inferior pedicles.
  • This anatomical basis allows for the flap to be divided and transferred as two independent free-muscle flaps.

Findings:

  • Simultaneous transfer of two free-muscle flaps from one rectus abdominis muscle is feasible and safe.
  • The technique demonstrated excellent vascularization, functional restoration, and cosmetic results in five patients.
  • Minimal donor-site morbidity was observed with this approach.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This dual-flap technique provides a versatile and reliable option for complex reconstructive scenarios.
  • It offers an effective solution for moderate- to large-sized defects in multiple anatomical locations.
  • The rectus abdominis muscle flap serves as a valuable reconstructive tool in plastic and reconstructive surgery.
