Summary

White matter hyperintensity (WMH) lesions detected by MRI increase with age and are linked to hypertension. These findings suggest WMH may represent normal aging or an early sign of ischemic brain disease.

Background:

  • Advances in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) enhance detection of subtle central nervous system lesions.
  • The clinical significance of white matter hyperintensity (WMH) lesions, often seen on T2 MRI, is debated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between WMH lesions and clinical parameters in neurologically asymptomatic individuals.
  • To determine factors influencing the prevalence and severity of WMH.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of brain MRI scans from 240 asymptomatic individuals.
  • Proton and T2-weighted MRI using a 0.5 T imager with specific spin echo parameters (TR 2800 ms, TE 40/100 ms).
  • Visual analysis of WMH using a four-point grading system and correlation with age, gender, symptoms, and hypertension.
