Summary

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) show minor, inconsistent changes in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) patients. These BAEP alterations may stem from chronic hypoxia and hypercapnia associated with sleep apnea.

Background:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a prevalent condition affecting respiratory function during sleep.
  • The potential involvement of the brainstem in OSAS pathogenesis remains an area of investigation.
  • Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) offer a method to assess brainstem auditory pathway function.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of the brainstem in the pathogenesis of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.
  • To evaluate brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) in patients diagnosed with moderate to severe OSAS.

Main Methods:

  • A study was conducted on 15 patients with moderate to severe OSAS and upper respiratory tract pathologies.
  • A control group of 15 healthy subjects was included for comparison.
