Summary

Transient neurologic symptoms occurred in 37% of patients after spinal anesthesia with 5% lidocaine. Bupivacaine resulted in significantly fewer symptoms, suggesting a potential drug-specific effect.

Background:

  • Transient radicular irritation has been reported following spinal anesthesia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the incidence of transient neurologic symptoms (TNS) after spinal anesthesia.
  • To identify factors associated with TNS, particularly the role of hyperbaric 5% lidocaine versus 0.5% bupivacaine.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective, blind, nonrandomized study of 270 patients undergoing gynecologic or obstetric procedures.
  • Spinal anesthesia administered using either 5% lidocaine or 0.5% bupivacaine.
  • Postoperative evaluation on day 3 by an unaware quality assurance nurse.
