Summary

Diabetic patients undergoing urgent gallbladder removal had more severe acute cholecystitis but comparable postoperative outcomes to non-diabetic patients. This suggests reconsidering prophylactic cholecystectomy for asymptomatic diabetics.

Background:

Diabetes mellitus is associated with increased risk of surgical complications.
Acute cholecystitis severity and outcomes in diabetic patients require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare postoperative outcomes and disease severity in diabetic versus non-diabetic patients with acute cholecystitis undergoing urgent cholecystectomy.

Main Methods:

A case-control study comparing 32 diabetic patients with 32 matched non-diabetic controls.
Data collected included comorbidities, symptom duration, postoperative complications, and hospital stay.

Main Results:

Diabetic patients had higher rates of cardiovascular disease and trends toward increased bactobilia and infectious complications.

Despite increased severity, postoperative outcomes and hospital stay were comparable between groups.

Conclusions:

Diabetic patients with acute cholecystitis may experience more severe disease but similar postoperative courses compared to non-diabetics.
