This study introduces a cognitive model for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), highlighting how faulty inferences fuel core beliefs. An Inference-Based Approach (IBA) therapy is presented to address these cognitive distortions.

Background:

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors.
Existing cognitive models often focus on exaggerated fears of improbable events.

Observation:

OCD core beliefs develop through illogical inferential processes.
These include reasoning from irrelevant associations and dismissing evidence by seeking a "deeper reality."

Findings:

A novel cognitive model proposes OCD beliefs stem from faulty inferences.
Inference-Based Therapy (IBA) targets these specific reasoning errors.
IBA shows promise for clients unresponsive to traditional behavioral therapy.
