Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Biomaterials Science

Background:

  • Partial pulpotomy is a dental procedure to preserve pulp vitality.
  • Calcium hydroxide materials are commonly used for pulp capping.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the pulpal response of Dycal and Pulpdent Multi-Cal after partial pulpotomy in human permanent teeth.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of these materials in promoting healing and dentin bridge formation.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty human permanent teeth underwent partial pulpotomy and were treated with either Dycal or Pulpdent Multi-Cal.
  • Teeth were histologically examined after 4 months to assess pulpal response, healing, and bridge formation.
  • Bacterial presence was evaluated through stained serial sections.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Dycal group: All 10 teeth showed complete soft tissue healing and dentin bridge formation with no bacterial penetration.
  • Pulpdent Multi-Cal group: Six teeth had acceptable results, but four showed severe inflammation or necrosis due to bacterial penetration.
  • One tooth treated with Pulpdent Multi-Cal experienced pulpal pain and was extracted.

Conclusions:

  • Human permanent pulps can achieve tissue healing and dentin bridge formation when bacterial microleakage is prevented.
  • Dycal appears to be more effective than Pulpdent Multi-Cal in promoting successful outcomes in partial pulpotomy, likely due to better sealing properties.
