Background:

  • Rhodococcus equi is an important bacterial pathogen causing significant disease in foals.
  • While R. equi infections are well-documented in other species like cattle and pigs, its impact on camelids, particularly llamas, is less understood.
  • Necrotizing lymphadenitis is a pathological condition characterized by tissue death within lymph nodes.

Observation:

  • A case of Rhodococcus equi-associated necrotizing lymphadenitis was diagnosed in a 2-year-old male llama.
  • Gross pathological examination revealed diffuse caseous necrosis in tracheobronchial and mediastinal lymph nodes, and extensive lung lesions.
  • Lesser degrees of necrosis were noted in the spleen, hepatic, and gastric lymph nodes, with numerous bacteria-laden macrophages surrounding necrotic areas.
