Platelets in Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) patients show significant ultrastructural changes, including altered granules and open canalicular systems. These findings suggest in vivo platelet activation, potentially linked to the thrombotic process in BCS.

Background:

  • Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is a rare condition characterized by hepatic venous outflow obstruction.
  • The role of platelet morphology and activation in the pathogenesis of BCS remains incompletely understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the ultrastructural characteristics of circulating platelets in patients with primary Budd-Chiari syndrome.
  • To correlate observed platelet morphology with markers of in vivo platelet activation.

  • Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to examine circulating platelets from 20 primary BCS patients and 20 healthy controls.
  • Plasma beta-thromboglobulin levels were assayed as a marker of platelet activation.
