Summary

Plasmodium berghei berghei infection in rats significantly reduces platelet survival and sialic acid levels. This finding may explain thrombocytopenia in malaria infections.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of Plasmodium berghei berghei infection on platelet recovery, survival, and sialic acid content in Wistar rats.

  • Platelet recovery and survival were assessed using 51Cr-labelled platelets.
  • Total platelet sialic acid was measured in infected and control rats.
