Summary

The quadriceps snip technique safely improves knee range of motion for various knee surgeries. Postoperative physical therapy remains unchanged, with good clinical quadriceps strength despite measurable weakness compared to a normal leg.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Knee Arthroplasty
  • Surgical Techniques

Background:

  • Surgical exposure of the knee can be challenging.
  • The quadriceps snip is a technique to aid knee exposure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the quadriceps snip technique.
  • To assess postoperative outcomes including range of motion and quadriceps strength.

Main Methods:

  • The quadriceps snip was used in 16 patients undergoing knee surgery.
  • Patients had diagnoses including osteoarthritis and arthritis.
  • Outcomes were assessed using the Hospital for Special Surgery Scoring System and Cybex testing.

Main Results:

  • All patients showed improved range of motion (average 30 degrees).

Related Experiment Videos

  • 10 patients had excellent and 6 had good outcomes.
  • Cybex testing showed weakness in extension compared to the contralateral normal leg.
  • Conclusions:

    • The quadriceps snip is a safe and simple surgical technique.
    • It does not necessitate special equipment or altered physical therapy.
    • The technique provides good clinical quadriceps strength postoperatively.
