Background:

  • The stepping test is traditionally used to assess vestibulospinal function.
  • Previous research has not investigated the effects of prolonged, low-intensity circular motion on post-exercise postural control.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of walking on a horizontally rotating circular treadmill on subsequent postural control during a stepping test.

Main Methods:

  • Seven healthy subjects walked for 2 hours on a circular treadmill with eyes open.
  • Following the treadmill exposure, subjects performed a stepping test with eyes closed, attempting to step in place without turning.

Main Results:

  • All subjects demonstrated a significant turning response in the direction of treadmill rotation after cessation of walking.

  • Post-treadmill stepping velocities were markedly increased (207–880 deg/min) compared to pre-treadmill baseline.
  • Subjects reported no subjective sensation of motion relative to the ground or surrounding space.
