Background:

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a common otolaryngological procedure.
Understanding current practices and complication rates in South Africa is essential for improving patient care and training.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the experience and techniques of South African otorhinolaryngologists regarding FESS.
To identify the prevalence of the Messerklinger approach and associated major complication rates.
To evaluate the current training and certification needs for registrars performing FESS.

Main Methods:

A questionnaire was distributed to 148 South African otorhinolaryngologists.
Data collected included surgical approach, anesthesia, and complication incidence.

Main Results:

87% of responding surgeons utilize the Messerklinger approach for FESS.
The primary anesthetic used for FESS in South Africa is general anesthesia.

Current FESS practices show a low rate of major complications.
