    Summary

    Thyroid stimulating antibodies (TSAb) were measured in subacute thyroiditis patients. While TSAb did not correlate with hyperthyroidism, they may play a role in the recovery phase of this thyroid disorder.

    Background:

    • Subacute thyroiditis is a transient thyroid disorder often associated with immune system abnormalities.
    • The role of thyroid stimulating antibodies (TSAb) in subacute thyroiditis remains unclear.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To measure TSAb levels during the acute and recovery phases of subacute thyroiditis.
    • To investigate the correlation between TSAb and clinical/biochemical evidence of hyperthyroidism.
    • To explore the potential role of TSAb in the pathogenesis and recovery of subacute thyroiditis.

    Main Methods:

    • Radioreceptor assay was employed to quantify TSAb levels.
    • TSAb were measured in 7 patients during acute and recovery phases.
    • Clinical and biochemical parameters of hyperthyroidism were monitored.

    Main Results:

    • High TSAb levels were detected in 4 out of 7 patients during the acute phase.
    • TSAb levels persisted for several weeks in patients with initially high levels.
    • TSAb detection did not correlate with hyperthyroidism, suggesting limited in vivo stimulation.
    • TSAb binding to thyroid membranes in vitro was observed.

    Conclusions:

    • TSAb may not be the primary cause of transient hyperthyroidism in subacute thyroiditis.
    • TSAb might play a role in the recovery phase of subacute thyroiditis.
    • Further research into suppressor cells and immune abnormalities in thyroid damage is warranted.
