Prostatic stents effectively cleared urinary outflow obstruction in 81% of men with benign prostatic hyperplasia. While some stents were removed, they offer a valuable temporary solution for urinary retention.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Medical Devices

Background:

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) frequently causes urinary outflow obstruction.
  • Urinary retention is a common complication requiring intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the PROSTAKATH urospiral stent.
  • To assess its utility in managing urinary outflow obstruction in a multicenter setting.

Main Methods:

  • A multicenter study involving 87 male patients with urination problems.
  • Inclusion of patients with total urinary retention.
  • Evaluation of PROSTAKATH urospiral stent performance and functional duration.

Main Results:

  • Urinary outflow obstruction was resolved in 81% of patients.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The mean functional time of the stent was 9 months.
  • 39% of stents were removed, with 15 removed shortly after insertion. Chronic urinary tract infection significantly reduced functional time.
  • Conclusions:

    • The PROSTAKATH urospiral stent is a viable alternative for managing urinary retention in patients awaiting prostate surgery.
    • It may also benefit patients with obstruction due to prostate cancer and prevent bladder neck contracture.
    • The stent is not suitable for entirely bedridden or demented patients.
