Background:

  • Solid cell nests (SCN) are incidental findings in thyroid glands.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the histogenesis of SCN using histologic and immunohistochemical methods.
  • To determine the cellular origin of SCN within the thyroid gland.

  • Histologic examination of 11 surgically obtained thyroid glands containing SCN.
  • Immunohistochemical analysis of SCN for various cellular markers including calcitonin, CEA, calcitonin gene-related peptide, chromogranin A, and keratin.

  • SCN exhibited solid and cystic structures, with mucinous material and goblet cells observed in some cases.
