Summary

Thyroparathyroidectomy (TPX) causes hypocalcemia, but does not block compensatory lung growth after pneumonectomy (PNX). This study found lung mass increased normally in TPX rats following PNX, indicating calcium is not essential for this specific growth response.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of TPX-induced hypocalcemia on compensatory lung growth in rats.
  • To determine if hypocalcemia blocks lung regeneration following pneumonectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent TPX to induce hypocalcemia.
  • Animals were subjected to either sham thoracotomy or left pneumonectomy (PNX) on post-TPX day 2.
  • Right lung mass, DNA, RNA, and protein content were assessed on day 9.
