Summary

Interleukin-3 (IL-3) infusion temporarily reduced monocyte and eosinophil counts but enhanced monocyte phagocytosis, killing of Candida, and migration. This suggests IL-3 could boost immune defenses in immunocompromised patients.

Background:

  • Interleukin-3 (IL-3) is known to affect leucocyte function in vitro.
  • Its in vivo effects on haematological variables and monocyte function require further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of a single IL-3 infusion on haematological parameters and monocyte function in healthy individuals.

Main Methods:

  • A single IL-3 infusion was administered to five healthy volunteers.
  • Haematological variables, monocyte adhesion molecule expression (CD11b, L-selectin), respiratory burst activity, phagocytosis, and candidacidal activity were measured.
  • Neutrophil and monocyte migration in a 'skin window' model was assessed.

Main Results:

  • A rapid, transient decrease in circulating monocytes and eosinophils was observed post-IL-3 infusion.
