Microwave treatment of BPH: still an option?

Surgery, the gold standard in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is presently performed in the majority of patients who receive treatment. An increasing number of alternative options recently became available for treatment of BPH and especially minimal invasive treatment modalities, such as TUMT (transurethral microwave thermotherapy), have become increasingly popular. Results of TUMT have been very encouraging: both subjective and objective response have been reported on. A number of issues regarding the use of this treatment modality remains to be answered. In general, TUMT seems to be a valuable acquisition as a minimal invasive therapeutic alternative for treatment of BPH.
