Developmental profiles of spontaneous movements in infants
1Research Centre for Applied Psychology, School of Psychology Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Western Australia.
Insights
This study tracked infant spontaneous movements, revealing age-related changes in motor patterns. These developmental profiles help identify normal and abnormal infant motor behavior.
Area of Science:
- Developmental neuroscience
- Motor development in infancy
- Infant behavioral analysis
Background:
- Understanding spontaneous movements is crucial for assessing infant motor development.
- Existing classifications provide a framework for categorizing infant movements.
- Longitudinal studies are needed to establish normative developmental trajectories.
Purpose of the Study:
- To establish developmental profiles for spontaneous movements in healthy infants.
- To analyze the influence of posture and mobility on movement patterns.
- To characterize temporal changes in leg kicks and arm waves during early development.
Main Methods:
- Video analysis of spontaneous movements in 50 full-term infants (2-50 weeks old) during 1-hour home sessions.
- Categorization of movements using established classifications (Thelen, Hopkins & Prechtl).
- Determination of developmental profiles for movement frequency and temporal characteristics.
Main Results:
- Movement frequency was significantly dependent on infant posture and mobility (P < 0.05).
- For infants up to 6 months, leg kicks and arm waves showed increased speed and decreased variability with age (P < 0.05).
- Distinct developmental trajectories were observed for different movement types.
Conclusions:
- Established developmental profiles for infant spontaneous movements provide a benchmark for normal motor behavior.
- These profiles can aid in the early detection of atypical motor development.
- Changes in movement speed and variability reflect maturation of the infant motor system.
Abstract:
Spontaneous movements were observed for 1-h sessions in each of 50 normal full-term infants aged from 2 weeks to 50 weeks in their own homes using videoanalysis. Movements were categorised according to the classifications of Thelen [17] and Hopkins and Prechtl [10]. Developmental profiles for the frequency of occurrence of the different types of movements were determined. These were found to be dependent on the posture and mobility (P < 0.05) of the infant. Developmental profiles for infants up to 6 months of age were also produced for the temporal characteristics of leg kicks and arm waves. The speed of the flexion and extension phases of both arm waves and leg kicks were found to increase significantly (P < 0.05), with a corresponding decrease in variability over age (P < 0.05). These developmental profiles may be useful in determining normal and abnormal motor behaviour in early infancy.

Anatomical Movements
Here are some common anatomical movements:
Flexion and extension motions are in the sagittal (anterior–posterior) plane of motion. These movements take place at the shoulder, hip, elbow, knee, wrist, metacarpophalangeal,...

Somatic Spinal Reflexes
One of the most well-known somatic spinal reflexes is the stretch reflex, which is activated by the sudden stretching of a muscle. This reflex involves the activation of specialized sensory receptors called muscle spindles, which are located in the muscle tissue and detect changes in the length and speed of muscle contractions. When a muscle is suddenly...
Language Development
The critical period for language acquisition suggests that the ability to acquire language is at its peak early in life. As people age, this proficiency decreases. Language development begins very...
