Summary

Elevated p53 protein levels are common in sun-exposed skin cancers like basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). This study confirms p53 as an early indicator of UV-induced DNA damage in the epidermis.

Background:

  • p53 protein levels are often elevated in basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) on UV-exposed skin.
  • Previous findings regarding p53 levels in benign epidermal neoplasia (BEN) and normal epidermis (NE) are inconsistent.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate elevated p53 protein levels in normal epidermis (NE), reactive hyperplastic epidermis (REH), benign epidermal neoplasia (BEN), actinic keratosis (AK), SCC, and BCC from sun-exposed areas using immunohistochemistry.

Main Methods:

  • Immunohistochemistry was employed to detect p53 protein levels.
  • The study included samples from NE (n=52), REH (n=8), BEN (n=48), AK (n=60), SCC (n=13), and BCC (n=42) located on sun-exposed skin.

  • This suggests p53 alterations occur early in the development of UV-related skin neoplasms.
