Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the incidence of adhesions after major interventional urologic laparoscopy.
  • To compare adhesion formation between laparoscopic and open nephrectomy in a porcine model.

Main Methods:

  • 16 pigs underwent either laparoscopic (N=8) or transperitoneal open (N=8) nephrectomy.
  • Adhesion incidence, number, grade, and extent were assessed at operative and access sites.

Main Results:

  • Adhesions occurred at 12.5% of operative sites in the laparoscopic group versus 75% in the open group.
