Summary

Early melanoma detection and prevention are key to reducing mortality, as thinner melanomas are more treatable. While public awareness of sun exposure risks has improved, significant behavior change is yet to be observed.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Public Health
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Malignant melanoma treatment advances remain limited, necessitating focus on early detection and primary prevention to decrease mortality rates.
  • Current strategies for reducing melanoma mortality rely on surgical intervention for thinner, more curable lesions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the progress in early detection and primary prevention of malignant melanoma.
  • To assess changes in public knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding sun exposure over the past decade.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of trends in melanoma detection and treatment thickness over 10 years.
  • Review of public health surveys assessing knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported behaviors related to sun exposure and sunburn.

Main Results:

  • Melanomas are generally detected and treated at thinner stages compared to a decade ago, indicating improved early diagnosis in many regions.
  • Public knowledge and attitudes towards sunburn and tanning have shown positive moderation, suggesting increased awareness of risks.

Conclusions:

  • Earlier diagnosis and surgical treatment of thinner melanomas are crucial for improving survival rates.
  • Despite increased awareness, significant changes in public behavior regarding sun exposure have not yet been widely evidenced, highlighting a gap between knowledge and action.
