Effect of antibiotics on the results and complications or thoracic operations. Par II
Abstract:
The role of antibiotics in the therapeutical result and in the postoperative complications was studied after 557 thoracic operations. It was found that antibiotics have no decisive role in the therapeutic result and there was no difference in the incidence of wound infections between the groups treated with different antibiotics. The principles and practice of treatment of would infections and pyothorax are discussed in detail. No relationship was found between the incidence of postoperative respiratory complications and the various drug treatments. Prevention and treatment of postoperative respiratory complications are discussed. The length of the febrile period was independent of the antibiotics applied. Their time of application, the problem of changing drugs and their side-effects after thoracic operations are analyzed.
Insights
Antibiotics did not significantly impact therapeutic outcomes or reduce wound infections after thoracic surgery. Postoperative respiratory complications and fever duration were also independent of antibiotic use.
Area of Science:
- Thoracic Surgery
- Infectious Disease Management
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Postoperative complications are a significant concern following thoracic operations.
- The role of prophylactic and therapeutic antibiotics in mitigating these complications requires ongoing investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the impact of antibiotic administration on therapeutic results in patients undergoing thoracic surgery.
- To assess the influence of antibiotics on the incidence of postoperative complications, including wound infections and respiratory issues.
Main Methods:
- A retrospective analysis of 557 patients who underwent thoracic operations.
- Comparison of outcomes between patient groups receiving different antibiotic regimens.
- Detailed analysis of wound infection and pyothorax treatment protocols.
Main Results:
- Antibiotics demonstrated no decisive role in overall therapeutic outcomes.
- No significant difference in wound infection rates was observed across different antibiotic treatment groups.
- Postoperative respiratory complications and the duration of the febrile period were not correlated with antibiotic treatment.
Conclusions:
- Antibiotic use does not appear to be a critical factor in achieving successful therapeutic results or preventing common complications after thoracic surgery.
- Current antibiotic practices may not be effectively preventing surgical site infections or respiratory issues in this patient population.
- Further research into optimal strategies for preventing and managing thoracic surgical complications is warranted.
