Summary

Periappendiceal abscess can be challenging to diagnose. Interval barium enema and laparoscopic intervention offer a beneficial approach for diagnosis and treatment, especially where right-sided diverticulitis is common.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Right-sided colonic diverticular diseases are more prevalent in Far Eastern countries.
  • Accurate preoperative diagnosis between appendiceal abscess and right-sided diverticulitis with abscess is difficult.
  • Conservative treatment followed by elective interval surgery is standard for periappendiceal abscess.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of interval barium enema and mini-invasive procedures for periappendiceal abscess management.

Main Methods:

  • Eight patients with periappendiceal abscess received conservative antibiotic treatment.
  • Interval barium enema and laparoscopic intervention were performed.
  • Clinical data, imaging results, and pathological diagnoses were reviewed.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The frequency of periappendiceal abscess was 6.8%.
  • Barium enema and laparoscopic findings showed good correlation with pathological diagnoses.
  • Laparoscopic surgery provided advantages with no operative complications.

Conclusions:

  • Interval barium enema and laparoscopic diagnosis/treatment are valuable for periappendiceal abscess.
  • This approach is particularly relevant in regions with high rates of right-sided diverticular diseases.
