Two women with cardiac tumors diagnosed as ectopic thyroid tissue experienced symptom relief after surgical resection and coronary artery bypass grafting. Both patients remained symptom-free post-surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Pathology
  • Cardiothoracic Surgery

Background:

  • Ectopic thyroid tissue in the heart is a rare congenital anomaly.
  • Cardiac tumors can present with various cardiovascular symptoms.

Observation:

  • Two women, aged 61 and 34, presented with cardiac symptoms including cough, dyspnea, and murmurs.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) revealed incomplete right bundle branch block (IRBBB) and abnormal repolarization in both patients.
  • Echocardiography identified right ventricular tumors arising from the interventricular septum.

Findings:

  • Surgical resection of the tumors revealed histologically confirmed ectopic thyroid tissue (benign).
  • The 61-year-old patient also underwent left mammary artery to anterior interventricular branch coronary artery bypass grafting.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Both patients experienced complete symptom resolution following treatment.
  • Implications:

    • This case series highlights the importance of considering ectopic thyroid tissue in the differential diagnosis of cardiac tumors.
    • Surgical intervention can be effective in managing these rare cardiac anomalies.
    • Successful outcomes demonstrate the feasibility of combined tumor resection and revascularization when indicated.
